Ohwell Nothing but Gafftops and SkipJacks!?

Looking for any advise, I'm fishing in Lavaca River to the Lavaca Bay fishing with the birds and all. The river is plenty deep for cooler water at the bottom and I tried fishing at all depths with arties. Trout Killers, Speck Lures, Gold Sprite Spoon the crazy thing to me is that I'm catching Gafftops and Skipjacks as if they were trout??? I'm sure there has to be reds or maybe even few trout in the deeper water of the river/bay. Any ideas of how to try to find them or should I be just glad i'm catching something?? Also I have been told Gafftop move in before the trout moves in, is this really true? If so how many days our the trout behind them? All suggestion would be great.
