Had a discussion this morning with the crew about the "just keep 5" thing. Had a mix of opinions but all in all seems to be a meat haul opinion and a conservation opinion. I wonder if one of these days bay fishing will look more like bass fishing. It already has the big tourneys, fast boats, sponsors, and egos.
Speckled trout just taste so much better than a bass. It's always been considered a "table fare" fish. The current limits only reflect reactionary measures from the past. Looking at the data from TP&W gill net surveys, at least this part of the coast is showing counts on par or better than pre-83' freeze results. I will have to agree with their reports. Fishing has been on an upswing for the last couple of years with this year being one of the best since 96'. What will next year be like? No one knows. It could be better or worse. A change in bag limits or a conservationist point of view are not going influence the cyclical nature of speckled trout one bit. Only Mother Nature will. So we have to wait to see. And again the solution will be reactionary to what has occured. This "Just keep Five" (we have to save them) is the speckled trout equivelant to Chicken Little's "The sky is Falling". Wait until it actually starts to rain/freeze/redtide/other disaster/whatever happens before trying to impose these convoluted liberal conservationist point of views upon the rest of us.
Why don't you just reply with your OPINION instead of handing out red marks because someone doesn't go along with the your/conservationist "status quo".
"That approach doesn't work". What do you mean? Stating my OPINION about a subject that I make my living from doesn't work? What do you do? I harvest speckled trout for people that expect a box full of them. I welcome you to come fishing. It will either change your mind about trout numbers or make you sick when you see how many actually are being filleted on any given day. Good day. I have to go get ready for tomorrows harvest.
Ever stop and think that maybe it is time to try and change some of those expectations from your clientele. Is it really about having a seafood market on the water or is it maybe more the experience of the whole trip?
As for cyclical, if spwaning biomass is managed to continual high numbers by harvest reduction (lower bag limits) then does it not stand to reason that the fishery can rebound that much quicker when an event happens ie freezes?
If all you want is fillets. There are more cost effective ways of getting your seafood. If it's only about a full icechest then you're really missing the whole experience.

I really enjoy listening to all the Fish "PIMP'S" views on how to manage the resource.
