From what I have heard from friends over there, you can still fish out Venice; there are just no hotels or anything. I am planning on heading over there in a couple of weeks, and right now our plan is leave out of Venice to fish the lump for a day. If everything holds up and we get to go, I will let you know.

Cool Venice

Wildbill;

Sounds like the Venice I visited in 1976...

I wish those folks the best in getting back to normal
as fast as they can....

I fished out of Venice on 1/15/06. Cypress Cove had a back down ramp, but no docks. Just pilings sticking up. We launched at Venice Marina. They have what appears to be new docks and a new back-down. The slab leading to the ramp just wasn't finished. The slab was offset from the ramp by about 10 feet. It was a challenge to get the boat in the water, but worked out OK after a little extra steering. There was no facilities of any sort for at a 1.5 hour drive from Venice towards N.O. NO people, nothing. Make sure you have everything you need before you leave the New Orleans area. Cellular service was even minimal to non-existent for that 1.5 hour. You will pass a check point in Port Sulfur, be sure to have your boat papers and you will be OK. On the trip down and back up we only saw one other vehicle the entire time.
That said, I plan to launch there again this weekend if the weather allows me to head to the Lump.

I fished Venice 1/11 & 1/12. We got a pass at the Plaquemines Parish Sherrifs office to get through the roadblock at Port Sulfur. They asked for our La fishing license and Tx driver license. Cypress Cove is still tore up pretty bad but the hotel owner said he will be open in May. We stayed at Vence Marina at our guide's condo (James Peters; contact him at ospreycharters.net). Venice Marina had ice and bait and the boat ramp had fresh cement poured.
