GPS question

So I'm totally new to running a boat on the coast- we just bought our first one. It has a nice Lowrance GPS/chart plotter. I'm wondering if buying a chip for it, like the Navionics Platinum Plus (western gulf), would show me things like hidden reefs that I might otherwise not see and run aground on or damage my boat/motor? I don't mind paying a couple hundred dollars for something that'll give me some warning that there's something ahead that needs to be avoided.

It won't show reefs or other obstructions it will show smaller channels and islands along with channel markers

Yep, you need to not depend on it to much. use your eyes and keep a watch out and mark reefs and such as you go for reference the next time.

Ok. Then what is the advantage of having these maps over the base maps that are already installed- do they not show the channel markers, islands, etc? I guess I'm kinda lost on why it would be worth the extra $200 expense?

Not sure about the Navionics, sorry, but I just purchased the BlueChart g2 Vision card (Garmin). It hasn't arrived yet, but I bought it primarily for the Auto Guidance function.

Without the Vision card when you route to a waypoint it may take you over land to get there (shortest path). With the AG, it is "supposed" to avoid wrecks, shallow water, etc.

Can you do a search and see if Navionics has the same function? In my opinion, if it does - that alone is worth the price of the upgraded map/software.

I think you'll find the additional information helpful.

I bought my blue chart g2 (garmin) on ebay for $50 - based on a 2cooler suggestion. I'd try that route if I were you.

FYI I think the chip came from a warranty returned GPS unit, the seller was a business. Worked perfect for me.
