Quirky Braid Backlash
I can be using my Chronarch loaded with Power Pro 30# and have it working fine and then it will start to give me a bunch of unexplained backlashes. Not throwing into the wind. Sometimes dead downwind. It just locks up, sometimes pops the lure off the leader. I will put the rod up and use my backup and when I pick it back up an hour later, it works normally. Sometimes I will put Reel Magic on the spool and it helps some. What's the deal? Am I doing something wrong? I did put some Super Slick PP on my other reel and had no problems with it. Maybe I need to upgrade to that on all my reels. I love braid, just can't figure out the unexpected bird nests.

Don't mean to insult with such a simple suggestion, but try stopping your rod tip behind your head for a second before you start forward with your cast. I find that when fishing is good and I'm all amped up I tend to start forward with my rod tip too quickly which results in the braid popping at the lure and backlashes.
This may not be the issue but i hope you figure it out.

Sounds like it may have a problem with an inconsistent brake or cast control knob setting. This could be caused by many things, i may be wrong but if it works great one time then bird nests right after that for no reason it could very well be a brake issue or maybe youre doing what i do when i try to cast too hard to make a long cast, that will surely cause a backlash.

I haven't been throwing braid all that long, but sounds more like an issue with the reel.

Have tried lots of things
I have played with the brakes and tension knob. It will still jump up and bite me from time to time. I could be trying to get too much distance on occasion but sometimes it's just an ordinary cast. It infuriates me when it happens. I deserve a backlash sometimes for throwing a light lure into the wind but a Spook Jr. downwind? I don't think so. It seems to be sticky on the spool and it just rolls under the bottom of the spool and jams up.

That is when I backlash braid, when I over throw.

I ran into a similar issue on my first outing with a brand new Core 50MG spooled with 30lb Windtamer. Very light wind, and I was casting with it. Out of nowhere it would backlash about every 8-10 casts. Finally, it backlashed bad enough to break, sending my jig head and assassin flying, and the end of the braid was buried in the spool so deep I could never find it. I pulled that braid off and replaced it with Suffix 832 and have had no issues. The only backlash I've had with it was trying to cast into a stiff wind, which I shouldn't have in the first place.

Now its sounding like your braid needs to be spooled up tighter to eliminate the line from digging in itself. When it wraps up backward with a bigger bait thats probably what the problem is. The weight of the lure during the back cast makes it dig in. You mentioned it feels "sticky", that sounds like another sign of loose braid. Hope this helps, dont give up on it.

maybe your braid is to old a worn out. Happens to me, then I put new braid on and it goes away.
