spoil banks?

If you stay on the east side of the ship channel spoil banks how much effect does the ship traffic have on you? I have a 16' jonboat, I dont want to get in over my head but i think i should be ok in my little boat there? Am I on the right track here or not? This is a pretty short run from thomsons and pretty close to the house. I have never been there but I have heard this area is pretty productive at times. Is Ash lake worth giving a shot? Its pretty close also.
thanx Tim

Some of the tanker waves are bad for my 21 foot boat... You might wanna ride one in the boat to see how big they are before you anchor up. They can swamp a Jon boat in a hurry

I guess from the responces the east side is not protected? maybe me first trip to the spoil banks needs to be with someone else(in a bigger boat) I just figured from looking at the maps the ship traffic would be on the west side, is that incorrect? Is there any other places close to thomsons? I just trying to find some places closer to home, but I dont want swamp my little boat either. I have been going out at Hugo point but havent been having much luck there

Keep some anchor rope in the boat. When you see the wake coming, be ready to put the slack in the water, leaving the end of the rope tied to the boat. If you're ready for the wake and aren't anchored, you'll probably be all right. Don't be surprised.

I guess that the ship traffic is on both sides? I guess ill go back to Jones lake, its just a long drive but I always manage to catch a few fish there. Ill figure this stuff out sooner or later. About what time of year does the fishing get better in the bayous on the NW end of Trinity bay, Jacks pocket, Reds bayou? I have heard Ash lake can be pretty good at times, anyone on here fish there?

Give Dow's reef a try, also the pier pilings that line that shoreline. Haven't fished there in quite a while, but used to do really well there.
