30/06 vrs. 25/06
probably an overbeaten topic but I'm new to rifles.
How much farther does the 25/06 shoot accurately?
I'm looking to hunt mainly whitetail and doubt I'll ever get the chance to hunt anything bigger but the gun I think I want (700 ADL) only comes in 30/06. And I found it right after I decided to get a wood stock, bolt action, 25/06.
Any sugestions? Here is the post I placed somewhere else also,
I'm looking to buy my first high powered deer rifle. I was thinking wood stock, bolt action, 25/06.
I figured I'd order it from Wal-Mart to get the best price.
Is there any particular brand I should avoid? Or any one I should consider over another?
I look through there catalog and get overwhelmed. Then end up leaving without ordering one. LOL How can there be so many choices?
And of course Wal-Mart and Academy do not carry them in stock for me to look at. And the gun stores around me do not carry them either.

Here's my response to the other thread:
"I hunted with 25-06 exclusively for about 15 years. Awesome caliber!!! 270, 280, and 30-06 are probably better all around calibers. But, if your just hunting Texas stuff, 25-06 will carry the load sufficiently.
Also, have only owned one, but, I've been told on numerous occasions, Remington is the most accurate mass produced gun, straight out of the box. Mine is danged accurate. If the thread gets moved to the Hunting forum, Gun Doc and others can probably give you some good info."
I'm partial to the 25-06. For no particular reason, I don't really care for a 30-06. I guess it's kinda like a "company car", seems Plain Jane, middle of the road, safe, nothing unique about it. However, if I could only buy one gun for all around Texas big game. I'd say the 30-06 is a better choice. You won't notice a difference in the way the 2 shoot. Stick with the 30-06, you'll be happy.
just my 2 cents.

The ADL is always a safe bet and either caliber will do fine. The 25/06 will be flater and like tx said the 30/06 is a great round but is just kind of plain jane. I'm partial to the .270 myself. In case you aren't aware of this the .270, 25/06, 30/06, and 280 are all the same 30/06 casing just necked down. Either way they will both knock down almost anything in north america. The 30.06 will defanitley have more knock down power though. flip a coin and if it lands on heads get the 30 if it lands on tails get the 25 and if you drop it get the 270. Another way to look at it is the 25/06 will be friendlier if you plan on taking women or children hunting in the future. I would defanitley go some where other than walmart to get the gun.

Since you are looking at ADL's and said you are buying from Walmart. You might take a look at Savage. http://www.savagearms.com/index.htm
I know Walmart carries them. And hear Savage has become a very accurate firearm straight out the box and they are priced right.
As for caliber. I think 25-06 is to small for all around. And I am not a fan of 30-06. Probably the most common whitetail firearm is the 270. which I happen to like.
But for me I setteled on the .308, it has plenty of knockdown without giving you to much recoil. Ammo is cheap and plentiful because it is still a military ammo.
Happy hunting.

A 30-06 can be loaded down to .308 power. It is also a military round. Garand anyone? It is more versatile and more powerful than the other rounds mentioned. 30-06 is available everywhere (may be THE most popular hunting round in North America). There's not a lot of trouble that can't be fixed with a $100 bill and a 30-06.

Either/or! I like the 06 for most all conditions. I consider the 25 and 270 a better sheep, antalope, mountian goat round in other words very open country.
If you are not an expearienced shooter I'd recomend a 243 or 6mm as a started rifle as both are good deer rounds plus can be used for varmits for more shooting practice.

The savage would be my other recomendation for a lower cost rifle. I have a buddy with the 10fp .308 savage that will shoot touching groups all day. The 30/06 is a great round but I opted for the 270 for performance reasons and the fact that I can still use it to take down anything in america. My reasoning for not getting the 30 /06 was that if I wanted or needed a 30 cal I would go with the 300 win mag. Both .270 and 30/06 can be found anywhere while 25/06 is alittle harder to find. But on the other hand I always make sure I have plenty of ammo before I leave home. The 30/06 is the number one cartridge used in america followed by the 270 and 7 mag.

Thanks for all the info guys. I just got back from Wal-Mart again lol and held the 700 ADL .270 .... Very nice priced a little higher than I hoped for at $439 but might buy it unless I go look at the Savages and Ruger M77 that someone is selling... I might end up in a big loop and get confused again.
Why would you not buy a gun from Wal-Mart Catn' Around ?

Does Wal-Mart have a gunsmith on the payroll? How about problems with the rifle, Wally World will tell you to send it to the manufacture. Yes, there are problems with new weapons.

Wounldn't most gun shops send you back to the manufacturor as well?
And I thought the bigger ones who have a gunsmith charge a lot more for the gun, but this is why I'm asking because I do not know if it's worth the extra $ ..
Pay $500 for a gun or $440 for the same gun and hope nothing is wrong with it .. What are the odds .. I'd assume a very high % of new guns are perfect and will have no problems. I'd hope so paying that much.. But I really do not know.
And if I do have to send it back to the manuf. would that really be that bad? Would the main thing be lost time from my gun?
Thanks again for helping me.
