Fridge running but not cooling??

My garage fridge is running, but not cooling. Any thoughts? This fridge is in good shape, but it was given to me. Is it worth getting fixed?

if you are handy and have some time to research the solution - do some searching on the internet.

www.applianceguru.com is a good forum for DIY repair help.

if you have to call a service company, it probably won't be worth it.

how hot is the compressor when its running? The fan went out on one a fridge of mine once, I saw that the fan was out. I just put a small fan down there blowing on the compressor and it started to work. gave me enough time to remove the broke fan and replace it with a new one.

Most likely starting components went out on compressor. You can get a 3 n 1 start kit from a HVAC parts wholesaler like Baker Dist or Johnson Supply. They don't cost a whole lot ($20-$40) and easy to install.

what is the freezer doing?

there's a couple of cheap things that could need to fixed, but you don't want to go overboard buying stuff you don't need:

defrost timer or start capacitor - one of those probably need to be replaced.

If the freezer is cold but the fridge isn't, it may just be frozen up. Many work simply by cooling the freezer compartment and circulating cold air from there to the fridge compartment.

When was it last defrosted?

It's been unplugged for a couple weeks. Plugged back in, and still nothing cold coming out. The freezer doesn't cool either.
