Rattletrap Lures

Does anyone out there throw Rattetraps in the surf for trout?

A friend picked me a few Rattletraps as a joke at a fire sale in the fishing section at an outdoors store.

But I gave them a try.

They cast like a missle but are very heavy to retrieve due to the location of where the line ties on the lure. It has a neat vibration to it but it is a hard lure to work for a long period of time.

So I screwed in a new tie in the very nose of the Rattletrap like a 51M Mirrolure. It still casts like a bullet but is much, much easier to retrieve. Just twitch it like a shrimptail. I has a kind of weird action but the trout seem to love it.

I also took another Rattletrap and screwed in a new tie on top of the lure and back about 1/2 inch from the nose. That seems to work best.

They are almost as cheap as dirt so losing them isn't a big deal. The hooks are kind of cheap and replacing them with something stronger and corrosion resistent is a good idea. But changing out the hooks for something better is pretty common with lures.

Been throwing traps around the jetties for years. A great trout lure.

I don't even work them. I just reel 'em in. Great lure to cover a lot of water with to find fish.

If they start blowing up on the mauler, switch to a topwater.
