Going out this weekend for first time tuna trip. Any suggestions on a good starter rod for tuna and what ever else I might encounter. I would like to bring my trout for bait fish and smaller game fish. I'll be using the boat rods for bottom fishing. So I need something for kings and tuna. I don't want to break the bank until I am more familiar with the fishing. Also any suggestions for top water and king fish set ups would be great. I am sure this topic has been covered but in my search of the threads I have come up empty.
Search the blue water board. There are many threads just like this. Imo, get a hopper jogging rod and an avet lx. Great all around set up. For top water, you'll want a spinning set up. And you'll want braid on both. Pm for more info.
Jigs of all sizes, some heavy and some light. Most important stay at the rail as much as you can, if your sleeping your not catching. If u get tired of jigging float a sardine or a chunk of blackfin while you drift and rest your arms.
If you can somehow get your hands on a live Blue Runner or flying fish you can drift those out and the big yellowfin will smash them if they are actively feeding. Popping is fun for yellowfin. I have found that more blackfin will hit the jig than yellowfin but they both taste great. Use the rail as the fulcrum for fighting big yellows if you can. Nothing like catching a hundred pound yellowfin. Chunking blackfin steaks for yellowfin is also a good strategy but it helps to be chumming blackfin pieces at the same time and keep letting line out on your chunk so it stays in the chum line. Hope this helps some.
