Texasflag4 Ruger SR1911

I was on a waiting list and collected my second of Rugers SR1911 since the Storm Ruger announced the closure of Ruger due to high demand has overloaded the factory by 1 million handguns since Jan to March of this year. They have a backorder slip a mile long mostly people that are scared of a new gun law in the future. Google it, it's true. I do shoot many weapons often but have maybe a stupid question you may can help my with. I'll attach a pic to ask what is this part of a 1911 for please. I see it's protects pinch, but pivots also. What's that about? Thanks.

It's called a beaver tail or palm safety.

Yes it is a "grip safety" - it must be compressed into the handle for the weapon to fire. All standard 1911s have this feature. The top portion of the grip safety is in fact shaped to protect your hand from the slide as well. Im guessing you probably have a thumb safety on the other side of the pistol. The combination of these two safeties make the 1911 a very "safe" gun.

Beaver tail. Well OK. I've shot over 1000 rounds through the oldest one and didn't see what it will do. I guess I was doing it right. This is a nice 1911 by ruger and I assume by your post it won't fire unless a tight grip compressed. I'll have to see next time I shoot it with a limp non compressed grip does. The manual does't explain, experience though will explain it to me better. I've never held a 45 with the beaver. I do tell you like all 1911's and rest you can shoot a clover pattern at 15 yards. Thanks Guys.

You might want to re-consider trying it with the limp wrist technique. Wouldn't wanna see that fine pistol go flying out of your hand and over your head or into your face.

Yes that would be dangerous. With 8 in the mag any 45 is pretty heavy and really no way to hold one lightly. Just in dry firing still don't see anything except the protection from the hammer or slide. Waiting till Saturday to go shooting and study the mechanics better. I carry a P90 in my truck and very accurate with it, but that gun is a brick. This new 1911 is thin enough to carry if you can deal with the weight, but no doubt puts down what you shoot with it. Thanks Guys..

You can definetly limp wrist a 1911 which will cause the weapon to stove pipe which is caused when the Grip safety(palm) is not gripped tight enough. Usually with one hand shooting. In fact had it happen to me last weekend shooting at a coon. BTW, you do have your finger on what is called a beaver tail.

Man O Man. Every real 1911 has a grip safety but some are not as long. I have seen pinched hands between the thumb and finger..

It does not take much pressure to disengage the grip safety. So even with a limp grip, odds are it will still fire. Best way to see how it works is put a snap cap in there or just dry fire it(again... be sure its unloaded, haha). try to pull the trigger without pressing it and it wont fire, add a little pressure to depress it and it will. 1911's are one of the safest guns out there IMO when the person carrying it does their part.
