Yamaha F60 Issues

I took my recently purchased boat out this weekend and immediately ran into some concerns.

As I was driving out of the marina, the low water pressure warning came on (at this point, the motor had been running for a few minutes already, mostly at idle). I immediately shut off the motor.

After a bit, I decided to start up the motor again. It started up right away with no issues. I let it idle for a few minutes and decided to try again. I put the motor in gear and a few seconds after, the warning came on again. Again, I shut off the motor immediately. After some deliberation, I decided to start up the motor again. This time, I put the motor in neutral and revved up the engine for a few moments.

I then put the motor in gear and never had the issue again for the rest of the day.

Can anyone provide some advice as to what the issue is (or if there is any at all?). To my knowledge, the motor had not had a load on it for quite some time leading up this weekend.

The motor is a 2005 F60.

Sounds to me like it is not getting enough water pressure at idle and you are getting an overheat warning alarm. If it has been sitting for a while it is probably that your impeller has set and does not operate as it should. From the way it sounds to me you need a water pump job.

x2. For peace of mind, I would drop the lower unit and replace impeller. And while you're at it, drain the lower unit and put in some fresh gear oil.

Sounds like u either had some junk in it from sitting so long or sucked up some grass sitting in the marina. Not uncommon if that's what it was. A new water pump wouldn't be a bad idea either way.

I was boating back to the Matagorda Harbor this past sunday when I ran up on a boat in the ICW that flagged me down. They said their motor had quit peeing and asked to be towed in. As they shut the motor off, I saw the pee-indicator stream start briefly. I asked them to restart the motor, and when they did, I saw a short stream of very muddy water shoot out and then their motor was back to normal. I assume they either had sucked some mud into the motor, or the negative pressure was sucking and holding a glob of mud onto the lower unit. Once the glob cleared they were fine. Not sure this relates to you or not. What others said above sound more likely what you are experiencing.

That's what I thought as well. However, I had a solid stream (clean) coming out of the pee hole and the warning didn't come on until I put the motor in gear.

The boat had been started up 2 weeks prior (prior to that, I'm not sure when was the last time it was run) and did not seem to have any issues.

I will probably still do what has been suggested.

Thanks for your input.

I ran a '99 F60 for 10 years on my Flatscat and when I sold it, it was running like a scalded ape! That motor is one of the best Yamaha ever made.
