Casting Distance AND HOW TO IMPROVE

With all the clear water have you gotten out and figured out what works best for your rod and reel?

Fishing with a buddy the other day. We started fishing a little before daylight and he kicked my butt badly. Come to find out he was throwing about 20+ yards father than I did in the dark. I was embarased when I saw just how much father he could get his old Curado SF and BG.

Have you found what works best for your set up?

I did Sunday morning

I was throwing Shimano Suffix 20 lb braid, two brakes out and tension about normal for the bait which was a 5/8 corky clone with no hooks. I ave around 30-33 yards with both rods.
Gray FTU 7 ft Pl2 and fast tip.
2 Curado 200E&
Curado BSF
Cu 200

I have a pinched nerve in right shoulder and torn cartilage in the left wrist.

I tired just 1 brake out and gained distance.
when I opened up the bait tension reel I started ave 44-50 yards with all the different reels and the old CU200 did the best with a little less line than the other reels.

When I tried no brakes out All I got ware over runs or a broken bait.

When I go to whip the baitcaster like you would a spinning reel I get over runs again.

WHAT DISTANCE DOES YOUR COMBO THROW?

ANY TRICKS TO IMPROVE DISTANCE or get rid of over runs that work for you?

I fish with 1 brake the majority of the time with the mechanical one pretty loose unless I'm throwing a heavy topwater. 2 brakes come out when I'm throwing strait into a stiff wind and even then if you can side arm it under the wind it's not always necessary to 2 brake it. For me it's just learning how much you need to thumb the spool. To get maximum distance you will be walking the line of a backlash. When I do get a backlash I know it's coming, just one of those things where you're kind of like **** here it comes but for some reason you can't bring yourself to do anything about it. I will free spool sometimes too and again you just have to learn how to thumb it right. When you free spool, I've found it's better not to really heave the lure. Most backlashes are caused by the spool moving to fast on the startup, which is why centrifugal brakes are so effective.

I use 6'6"-7' rods with moderate fast to fast actions. Where the rod comes into play is loading the rod up on the cast, kind of like fly casting. When you bring most lures back you can "load" the rod or impart a bend into it. This stores energy in the rod which you can use on your forward cast. You can load the rod on your forward cast by snapping the rod forward but again this can cause more overruns. This are the things I've noticed over the years and they work for me.

The shimano green and pink centrifugal weights are different too. I think the pinks are lighter than the greens. The thickness of the barrel is noticable. I throw with two pinks out all the time, its a good happy medium but dont know how far exactly. My calais will throw a top dog far enough to see the spool. Joking but it casts really far. All have 20# sufix 832

Try a longer rod. Amazing how much distance you can get with little or no additional effort.

Many years ago, I ran into Lloyd and Cookie Pepper at the fishing show. I had Lloyd make me an 8 foot popping rod. I forgot about it when I got out of wading.

This Summer, I attended a muskie fishing seminar in N. Wisc. Those guys are using very heavy duty 9 foot rods, throwing really heavy lures. They were not trying for more distance, but rather to allow them to ..."figure 8"..... the rods at boatside.

But, it caused me to haul out my lighter weight 8 footer. I haven't put it down since. R

I have improved my casting distance by cleaning my reels with the instructions from Dipsay and Bantam here on 2cool.I cast chronarch 100s and 200bsfs .Cleaning the entire reel like they instruct to do will lengthen your cast.

I use the least brakes to keep from getting over runs while casting. I set the reel tension very light and thumb it when it hits the water. that compromise works best for me to keep from back lashing. cleaning and oiling properly like mentioned above will help. like 1 drop of light oil on spool bearing, and 1 drop only

Thats what im sayin! Long casts are cool but if im working a lure i like to see it and see the bottom structure. As far as i cast it would take five minutes for a hookset to get there hahaha!

Ive noticed that if i just relax and toss the bait i get further casts. If i cast like im trying to hit a home run, i tend to overrun the spool some. Too much oil on the bearings is for sure a no no. I cleaned all my reels once and put three drops on the bearings and none of them would throw twenty feel. Cleaned the oil out with ether and one tiny drop of oil and back to casting a mile
