Surfside Beach - Hundreds of dead mullet/needle fish/sand eels
Drove onto surfside beach this evening and noticed dead fish washed up onto shore. Drove further down and noticed it was mainly mullet with a few needle fish and sand eels here and there....randomly I began coughing. I noticed someone else in the "Fishing Reports" not only coughed upon getting onto the beach but also saw the dead fish .....at first I thought it was shrimpers/dolphins but there's about 1/2 dead mullet about every foot for as long as I drove.....
Not sure if it is, but sounds like a red tide. I got caught up in a BAD one a few years ago on Surfside. My eyes were burning, and was coughing almost uncontrollably every time i took a breath. Bad stuff! I actually felt bad several days afterwards also.
I think it's red tide also.
I was at the mouth of the Brazos today and saw mullets and shad dying.
My lungs were irritated and I coughed a bunch.
Bad news.
I've never seen a red tide before. Nor do I know how/why it is caused. But from my understanding I thought a red tide killed all fish...not just one species (the mullet)....but I did read a little before this post and saw it had to do with the alge/microscopic foods that the mullet eat....
To report a suspected red tide, please call your local TPWD office or the TPWD Kills and Spills Team at 361-825-3244. Outside of normal business hours you may call TPWD's 24-hour communications centers at 512-389-4848 or 281-842-8100.
Its in the Facts this morning the Game Warden walked down and found all the dead fish. A Biologist is suppose to be there today taking water samples but I believe it is a red tide which is very toxic from what I hear. Friends fished yesterday caught nada. The fish knows whats happening and they moved out.
