First time disappointing...
Been planning an annual trip to the coast for my nephew and I for the last 5 years. It's a highlite for him as he lives in the Denton area. He only comes down once a year for this and of all the times, I get the call this afternoon at 2:00 "strongly" requesting my presence at work sat. and sun.
The past 4 years I've had the pleasure of introducing him to his first crabbing experience, including blood. "Ryan, even though they're small, they'll still pinch the fire out of you"
He caught his first reds with me in the Bessie Heights Marsh area, out of breath still lacking more line than his original cast, yet grinning from ear to ear, "are they all this mad?".
And last year, his first flatfish. "look uncle Jason both his eyes are on one side, and he's camouflaged. How's he stay upright?"
Well, now I have to cancel due to my work, and I feel like Damnit. I've never had to do this and its really difficult to deal with.
Hope it gets easier, but I doubt it. Not looking forward to having to deal with this type of thing in the coming years with my own son, but, I know, I chose this life.
It still sucks hearing the disappointment in his voice.
Done venting.

You being upset, or disappointed only shows that you care. If you didn't care, you wouldn't be disappointed, nothing wrong with what you have done man.
Sorry if you didnt want a reply.

Time will erase this day, but he will not forget his tugging with his first red, or his camouflaged friend. I dont remember reels, toys, or disappointments, I do remember the afternoons fishing (catching or not). I still thank my brother today for that.

Hopefully you can make it up to him some way and hopefully he understands that it wasn't your fault and let him know that you are upset as probably he is that you guys can't go fishing together.

Continue embracing the time with your nephew, as those will always be the one's you look back on and remember. It sounds like this unfortunate situation is the exception and not the norm. Stay positive - it sounds like you got a pretty good fishing buddy there.

That's too bad, BUT if anything, by not missing work you're still teaching him a valuable lesson..................PRIORITIES, which a lot of young people these days don't understand.

I had an uncle that lived in Colorado and I lived in Ballinger. Once a year he would come down and bring me something for fishing, a new reel, a rod, etc. He would take me fishing and I don't remember ever catching a fish sitting on the banks of the Concho River but just having someone that cared enough to make time for me was enough. I was fortunate that I had two uncles like that and a good father to boot.
What's that saying, "It takes a village to raise a child" ? Bull doo doo, it takes a good family.
