Tequila, Sunrise and West Cerveza Monday 8/2/10

We broke the jetties at day break to flat seas and no wind, set the cruise for 40 knots destination Tequila. We past a lot of scattered weed on the way out, but nothing with any formation to it. We arrived about 2 1/2 miles north of Tequila and set out a spread about 1/4 till 8. Still a lot of scattered weed, but there was plenty of bait in the area and the water looked pretty good. The seas were still flat, with a very slight chop on top to beak up the sun. At this point everyone had high hopes, and we were all convinced we were going to put some big fish in the boat. We pulled baits all day until about 2:30 at Tequila, Sunrise, West Cerveza, a small weed line we found about 5 to 6 miles south of Tequila/Sunrise and nothing all day not even a single knock down. The conditions appeared to be right and we must have pulled 20 different baits, with no takers. We ended up with a small grouper at sunrise, that we picked up on a quick stop to jig. We started our trip back in about 2:30, stopping several time along the way to see if we could finish out the day with some fish in the boat. Hit the shrimp fleet at about the 40 mile mark, probably 20 boats in the area. We hit about 8 of them with the same luck as the deeper water, nada (no shrimp either). We hit a couple more rigs after that on the way in nobody home at any of them. Same story on the way in as on the way out with the weed, only scattered nothing formed up. The conditions were wonderful and the boat ran great 250 +/- miles on 121 gallons, so that was a good thing but a few fish surely would have made the day perfect. Not sure what the deal was looked like everyone did well over the weekend out that way, guess we were a day late and dollar short. Saw several other boats out there some were making bait and headed deeper but the majority were on the troll. Not sure how everyone else did, hopefully better than us but we didn't see anyone hook up with anything. We will get them next time. If you were out that way yesterday, let us know how you did.

I am not sure anybody kicked their ***** this weekend. There were definately a few fish caught but not a great bite. I have spoken to 10-15 boats that experienced very similar results, including ours. We worked Boomvang, east and west cervesa's, a nice rip between east cervesa and little sister, little sister, intersection rigs and some offshore contour and didnt see a billfish. All of which was in blue water. We traveled almost 350miles and only had a few wahoo and some bottom dwellers to show for it. Inshore's bite was a pretty tough bite as well. The eastern stuff seems to be very slow right now. Dont feel bad we wil get them next time.

Well it sounds like a tough day but you gave it a good shot. Sure it was better than a day at work. Thanks for the honest report.

This is all due to the Horrible Accident with the Deepwater Horizon. The fish know that something is wrong. Believe it or not. The fish have their own intelligence. They have brains...we are going into their world. Hey..they the fish were around way before people. Give's ya something to think about.
Now..you guy's were out there fishin and some of us are just wishin. I have been skunked this year more then I like to say it. Look's like you were having fun out on the blue. That's what matters..Blue Water and Tight Line's.
Yull mug em next time.

Well the same way for us. We hit west tequila around 500 and trolled several small grass line on the way, Not a single HIT..... We could not even find a rip at all. We did manage one 60lb A.J. You are not the only ones who had a tough weekend. I need to look but I belive I saw a posting on a rip that turned out a few good black fins in our area. Like I said I did not get a chance to read it. On our way in about 40miles a great rip that went for miles and we turned up nothing....Oh well we still had a great time and that is all that matters to me....

Thanks for the replies guys. The day was definitely better than any way else I could have spent it that's for sure. Sounds from the replies like the few that posted threads were the only ones that had any luck over the past several days. Looks like the weather is going to hold through the weekend maybe we will get back out there and put it their arse. I always like to post up good trips and those where the fish aren't as cooperative to give the folks who are thinking of running out some ammunition for a game plan. Tight lines.

The guys I had out last Saturday worked their buts off for what we put in the box. I kept telling them that we sux'd that day, but when we got in found out we did pretty good considering what everyone else did. We had three good fish break off that could have been big snapper or possible grouper.

Here is a couple pics from Saturday...the big snaps were released of course!

Speaking of "game plan"...was the current running hard still. It's been tough the last couple times out.

Actually, the altimetry sucks for the area you guys were fishing.. seriously, it has for a few days now. The altimetry was favorable earlier last week as that nice blue water rip everyone is referencing pushed in. As the weekend progressed and that same rip closed off and moved Southeast, and the altimetry became worse. Positive altimetry (areas of orange/red) are areas of downwelling and places downward pressure on the pelagics/bait/rest of the food chain. They do not like the downward pressure , so they tend to move out of those areas. It can seem like an ocean desert in those areas of persistent downwelling...my 2cents on what you experienced yesterday.
