WE GOT SKUNKED OUT OF SABINE 7-29-10

Started out fishing the LA short rigs in search of triple tail, specks, and spanish makerel. Seas were nice as there was not a breath of wind. Found a weed line on the way there and saw a few triple tail but they were not interested in the speck rig, soft plastics, or live finger mullet and shad we threw at them. Got to the rig and didnt have a bite. Water was trout green and we had a current, no bait. Decided to run further out to find clearer water and possible weed lines. Came acroos a good rip about 15 miles offshore. There were some good patches of weeds here with lots of bait underneath. Located some really nice triple tail, but once again couldnt buy a bite. Headed out to Bosco's Reef after that to troll for some kings, but nothing. Hit the rigs 6 miles to the SE after that and the same story. I have had some good trips offshore this year so I guess I was due for one like this. Still had a good time, just no fish to show for our efforts. Anyone have a lure of choice that they use on triple tail. I know they love live shrimp, but that is not an option for me.

Thanks for the report - sorry you didn't have more luck.

I am far from an expert, but all of the triple tail I have caught under weedlines were caught using sardine/cigar minnow chunks.

Ditto the Gulp. They'll usually eat a really small mullet if you try to keep it just out of their reach.

No problem. Do fish it under a cork?

I guess that would be the shrimp made by Gulp that you are talking about. Any particular color or size? Do you put it under a cork?

yes the 3 inch shrimp, no particular color, no cork or weight. just put it on a short shank hook and twitch it in front of his face. I've caught them on gulp when they wouldn't look at anything else.

I usually just pitch it out on a hook with florocarbon leader, and maybe a split shot or two if needed for casting.
