Skip the strawberries for this year.

Buy garden mix from your local mom and pop nursery.

Top dress with compost. You can get all kinds of compost in bags now.

I like to mulch around the plants after planted. I use leaf mulch from leaves I get bagged in the fall. I let them sit in the bags all winter. I also like to use pine straw or hay if none of the other is available.

I keep the mulch pulled back away from the plant stems by about an inch or so.

Have fun.

I bought my garden soil from:

Texas Garden Soil
979-848-2282
9306 Fm 523 Freeport, TX 77541It was a 50/50 mix of top soil and compost. It is great. loose enough for the seeds to break thru easy and tight enough to not wash with heavy rains or watering. It is relatively cheap by the P.U. truck load or flat bed trailer load. Garden soil at Lowe's will set you back some coins if your bed is large.B.D

I ran across this product recently - Preen. I don't know much about it; however, if it works like it is said to work, weeds will be a thing of the past. I plan to post a Thread and ask other 2coolers if they have ever used it.

Also, this link has some good info for you on prepartion of your soil.

I looked at the label for Preen - garden weed preventer and found the active ingredient to be trifluralin. I farmed cotton for 16 years and this is what we used to prevent weeds coming up in cotton. I would never use it in a garden because it may carry over and prevent germination of the next thing you plant. When I used it in cotton it controlled most weeds but would not control large seeded weeds like cocklebur and sunflower. The carryover effect prevented following cotton with wheat or oats in the fall. Spring seeding of corn and maize was ok. Also, it won't stop anything coming up from a rhizome or runner like johnson grass or bermuda.

BD, no disrespect, but folks have been looking for the answer to weeds in the garden for a long time and still, the best, most healthy way is to take that hoe in hand and get after them.

No unintended consequences from that activity...except the benefits of good healthy exercise and vegetables that you can eat without fear of chemicals.
