Newb to boating in East Matagorda Bay.

Hey guys,

I've been a lurker for a couple years now and My dad just recently purchased our second boat which is a 19'6" Seafox with a 140HP Suzuki. We are not newbs to operating a boat. We are staying in Matagorda next week and this will be our first time to navigate this bay.

What are some areas to watch out for? I am somewhat familiar with the bay and I have several years experience kayaking so I know quite a bit about bottom structure but not much about East Matagorda.

Can anyone give me some hints or helpful tips?

Thanks in advance!

Focus on a map for shallow areas of the bay, watch the tide. Two feet makes a big difference in matagorda. Don't get your hopes up to slay them this time of the year. Enjoy the best trout fishery on the upper Texas coast.

Cool. Thanks.

After talking to some of the guides at the fishing show, I won't get my hopes up.

Is west bay any better? We will be staying on the river so getting to East or West bay should be just as easy.

Yes be careful on the eastern side, you can be beached on a sandbar quicker than you can say corky.

Some of the intercoastal cuts into the bay have some nasty oysters as well.

winds

EMB is great if there is no wind. Any wind over 12 MPH and it's mud hole. Winter tides can be very tough on a deep runninig bay boat/props due to areas of 1 ft of water on low tides.

Good luck.

Thanks for the help guys.

Is WMB any better? fishing wise? It looks like WMB is a whole lot deeper therefore easier to navigate.

WMB

West has alot of structure and is alot deeper. The SS can be awesome in the guts at low tide. There is always somewhere to hide on a windy day.
I fish both area's

Good luck

The south shore line. I would avoid west bay of you don't know it. You'll end up beached or on a log faster then u know it. watch the wind and hit the ss like fishinc said

So.... Both bays are difficult to navigate then?
