Conservation Crossfire/Fisheries Issues A place for everyone interested in fisheries discussion from a regulatory/political standpoint. The laws surrounding fishing and our fisheries are changing, and this is the place to learn about changes on the horizon. Please keep it civil. We can disagree with one another, without becoming disagreeable.

IFQ, SOS, ED, OC, CFH, ***?

As some know, I'm new to the fishing from a boat world, so a lot of this is Greek to me, so I'm reading a ton or trying to anyways. I get stopped with some of the abbreviations used.

What do all the abbreviations people are using in this conservation forum mean? Some examples are those in the title: SOS, IFQ, ED, OC, NMFS, CFH. What/who do they affect and how?

I am not looking for politics or arguments, looking for facts about what the plans are. Feel free to post your feelings ONCE each because its evident there are two sides, but I want to learn, not read a ******* match...

Two abbreviations that I know are.....beyond that, I'm lookin for a little help.

CFH- Collection, Fishing and Holding
SOS- Sector Separation
NMFS-Nat'l Marine Fisheries Service

Thanks, Greg

Well, that's a start, fairly self explanatory now that I know some abbreviations.

There should be a sticky/permanent thread with just a list of abbreviations for the newbies.

Greg,

Another resource you may find of value is the publication, "Understanding Fisheries Management: A manual for understanding the Federal Fisheries Management Process, Including Analysis of the 1996 Sustainable Fisheries Act". This publication was written by staff from the Alabama and Mississippie Seagrant Programs and though it's 10 years old, it's still relevant and includes many of the abbreviations you mention. The publication can be found online at http://nsgl.gso.uri.edu/masgc/masgch00001.pdf.

Another source for finding out the meaning of the alphabet soup of abbreviations that are often used in fisheries management can be found at the Gulf of Mexico Fishery Management Council's web site (http://www.gulfcouncil.org/). Once there, look to the left side of the home page and click on the link to "Library", then to "Frequently Used Acronyms".

And, as you've already found out, this site can be a useful tool in getting answers to some of your questions. Good luck.
