New Laptop -- need advice!
Time for a new laptop at our house. It'll be replacing a desktop, portability and battery life aren't huge. Basically need it for word processing, spreadsheets powerpoint, not a lot of media or graphics..... we handle quite a few pictures but don't do a lot of post processing....don't have fast enough internet to watch a lot of tv/video.
Wife is eyeballing this one at sams.....what does the 2cool brain trust say? Any recommendations?
Thanks
Eddie

What is the main reason for a laptop over a desktop for home use?

you may as well get a desktop for the size of that laptop...
Go with a 14" lighter weight notebook if you want portability... HP Pavilion dv4t series or something like that is fine, I have over 20 of them. Then, we also have alot more Dells too, Latitude e5400's and Inspirion 1440's. The HP's and Dells have been solid with only a few issues on the HP's.
The HP speakers are the best, and the design is much sleeker than Dell.. but the finish of HP's get finger prints alot easier.

I just got one like that, but with the 18.4" screen.
I likei t well enough, haven't really put it through it's paces though. I need to get my video editing software loaded on it to really work it out.
I do like the HDMI outputs. Since it has a bly-ray player on it, I can just plug it into the plasma TV to watch BluRay discs.
If the backlit keyboard is an option, GET IT!!
It's the best upgrade I made on it.

Portability within the house, and the eventuality that she'll leave home with it. She starts back to school in Jan to become a nurse practitioner.
It'll see the most use in the living room instead of our office. We'll also take it with us on vacations, etc.

I have been hunting for a laptop too the last few weeks.
The best bang for the buck I have found so far is this Gateway at Best Buy http://www.bestbuy.com/site/Gateway+...&skuId=9548661
It has a Core 2 Duo T6600 procesor , 500 gig hard drive, 4 gigs of Ram , 1600 x 900 17.3" screen. The only down side is is has integrated video.
But that is one heck of a deal on an Intel dual core laptop with a 17.3" screen and high resolution.
I can't find anything that even comes close in price to this one.
I did go and look in person and it is a very nice light weight machine. I will be picking one up this weekend.

And I'm definitely open to a smaller screen.

I didn't throw out a price, but the thousand dollar tag on that one is as high as I want to go.

I bought a HP dv5 series almost a year ago. Only thing about this one is, it runs Vista and I can't seem to get it to work with my wireless printer. Now my other HP laptop runs XP and connects with printer...no problems.
I have had Compaq, Acer, and Dell laptops in the past....had nothing but problems with them. HP all the way, IMO.
