Crab traps in the channel

Whoever put all the crab traps in the cut heading back to Caranchua Lake in west bay is a real arse hole. On a low tide your only options would be to run into them or hit shell. This particular channel is to small to do this in. Should be against the law.

Wow.. yeah, there's some tight spots there for sure.. especially low tide summer days. Did he put the pots in the channel and the ropes and floats are floating across the channel as well?

If you never saw them it'd be ok!

Sometimes they just seem to disappear or find themselves on shore somehow. I've seen weirder stuff happen

Thing is the guy that did this is not the kind of sport that would read this blog. I too have seen them wash up on shore, most of the time when you would least expect it.

I know who it is and I sent him a message. I think he will move them without any issues. I would not touch them though he can be temperamental.

So he's a crabber...or just plain crabby? Sorry - couldn't help it. LOL!

Seriously though, this can be a problem. Our crabbers here in Seadrift are all Viets. Language barrier for sure but I think the message finally sunk in. They are easy to get along with if you take time to explain that you're only trying to help. Closing Matagorda Island to crabbing for purpose of improving whooper habitat helped a bunch with traps in the sloughs, too.

BTW - (May save somebody an embarrassing moment) Handling of commercial crab traps is illegal...even if the intent is to improve navigation in a tight channel. Only the licensee or GW can legally touch them - except during the annual 10-day closure of the fishery during February (Crab Trap Cleanup.)

I talked to him and he said he would handle it. Apparently he tries to keep them out of the way but someone keeps running his traps and tossing them wherever they land when they are finished with them.

Thieving pirates make commercial crabbers a little "crabby"!

Sharp stainless prop blades and trap floats in narrow channels don't mix well do they.

Hammer down time.
