Cost of Fine For fishing in closed federal wildlife area

Calcasieu Lake - fishing behind the "closed" boundary signs at the weirs. Has anybody been caught & fined and if so what was the federal fine for the ticket?

Understand and agree. Definitely not worth it, not a good thing, know better and will never do it again. Four boats tied together just inside the signs and here comes the warden. Ticketed all of us one at a time. The fishing is too good so many other places over there than to try that.

So , besides lopping off your reeling hand , we still don't know the fine . I don't think it's a good idea to flaunt the law , just curious now .

I'm not sure what the fine is for fishing inside the signs, but I'm gonna guess it's probably not that harsh and still not worth getting inside the signs for. Any decent reel can cast to the weir from the legal boundary!

FYI: If anyone has ever seen that place when the current is ripping through the boat cut, there's a reason the signs are where they are at. I've seen several boats that got sucked into the boat pass, not a good outcome!

There are plenty of good and legal areas to fish in Calcasieu Lake. Why mess around with the "no pass sign"?

Back in 2012 LWFD agents arrested 3 men for "illegal shrimping". They were caught placing and running a 35' shrimp trawl across the mouth of the Grand Bayou weir at night. They tied the shrimp trawl in place, on the weir structure, then went back out into the lake. They would run back in, empty the pocket, go back out into the lake to cull their catch, then go back in and run it again.

They faced up to 1 yr in jail and up to $3500 each in fines from the state. Never heard what Feds did to them for shrimping in a NWR.

Need to remember, inside the signs and you are in a National Wildlife Refuge - federal offense.

Specific State offenses these guys were charged with: "Taking and possessing game fish with illegal methods brings a $400 to $950 fine and up to 120 days in prison. Leaving nets unattended carries a $500 to $750 fine and 15 to 30 days in jail. Blocking the passage of fish and taking shrimp with illegal gear each brings a $250 to $500 fine and up to 90 days in jail. Trawling at night brings a $100 to $350 fine and up to 60 days in jail."

All that being said, I was told by a friend who had a buddy get caught (take it for what it's worth) ..... it was a $500 fine for fishing inside the signs. I've seen guys get tickets written by Federal Agents from Cameron Prairie NWR, don't know what happened to them.
