Matagorda report 2/9-2/12

Made our first trip to Matagorda this past weekend. We were skunked on Thursday and Friday from both the surf and from the Colorado river near the mouth. We drove down to Mitchells Cut on Saturday and managed a 28 lb black drum but that was it. After being skunked on the Colorado again on Sunday morning we went back to the surf in front of 3 mile cut. It was perfect weather with very little current and we managed 3 big uglies ranging from 30-36 lbs, one slot red, one bull red weighing 25 lbs, and a couple lost. All caught on crab from the second gut between 1:00 and 4:30. The current was pretty bad on Thursday, Friday, and Saturday so we fished very little from the surf. We caught several small drum and and a 12 lb. drum on dead shrimp from the Colorado River in front of our RV we stayed in. All in all a productive trip and we enjoyed the variety of places to fish in Matagorda versus some of the other places we have been before.

How was the seaweed? I went to Sargent once and High Island once this last week and couldn't keep anything out bc of the weed.

Seawood was not too bad. I have definitely fished in worse. It was probably the worst in Mitchell's cut and the Colorado versus the surf. The drive down to MC was not too bad either. We drove down during low tide and made it there in about 40 minutes. Coming back was a little longer but still several hours before high tide. Would definitely recommend watching the tide charts for anyone planning on making that trip.

Heading down in a month to do the same thing you did. Any tips on fishing the surf or the river?
