Lake Livingston is a well known big cat fishery below the dam and it's just a little ways north of houston I believe

Try Buffalo Bayou. It is a real sleeper. The areas that you can access by vehicle like the spillway are heavily fished but if you find an area that can only be accessed by bike there is almost no pressure. I fish Buffalo Bayou in far west Houston with my kids. We only fish light tackle but catch lots of blues and channels up to 30". I've never tried heavy tackle and large baits but might in the near future.
