I find it hard to believe that no one mentioned fuel injector issues. We don't have a 6.0 in the yard that hasn't had a couple of injectors replaced at one point or another. Ford wants to blame the problem on the fuel filter being pugged and starving the injectors. We have never had this kind of injector problem with the 7.3s or any of our other engines. DT466Es & the newer cats have injector issues but not related to fuel starvation. The 6.0 has a poorly designed injection system. With all the other choices on the market I would not even consider a 6.0. There are those who have had good luck with them, but these are not the dependable engines that diesels have built their reputation on. On the other hand, they do pull good when they are running right.

I have had a few problems with mine. Mainly with injectors, but I believe that was self-induced by running straight vegetable oil on a vegistroke (home built) system while fuel prices were high. I put a FASS fuel system, and a set of 90hp injectors in to replace the stockers and got about as much of a power increase from that as an aggresive tow or economy tune. I'm happy with the power level now, and it has been much more dependable since removing the tuner.

I run 2-cycle TCW-3 oil in my fuel when I'm not running bio diesel to add lubricity. One major problem with these injectors is galling from low fuel pressure, the other is particulate accumulation in the spool valves from dirty oil. Most people you hear about with high mileage 6 liters will tell you that they change their oil every 3000mi.

Ours was okay until around 130k mi. when the turbo started getting blow-by (oil). A new turbo and it runs fine, but I think the 7.3's were better engines.

The good news: I still get 20mpg hwy and my lead-foot wife still gets 16mpg running short-hops all over the place. With diesel back down to a reasonable cost, we're driving it again. Like the man said, "Change the oil often." We get by with 4000 to 5000mi, but 3000mi is prob'ly better.

Forgot to add that I have 130k on the clock. I only run Valvoline Premium Blue 5w40 oil and have had good luck with it. I think the most valuable upgrade would be the FASS or Airdog Fuel Pump system. This ensures that there is no air in the fuel and gives consistent fuel pressure to the rails. I noticed a pretty good power increase and black smoke reduction by installing the FASS.

I use Amsoil fuel additive, but a few weeks ago, i ran into a guy that had 195k on his '05 and he said that he puts a pint of tranny fluid in his tank with every fill up! I won't be doing that, it's just what he told me!

Nothing wrong with ATF for fuel. It's a detergent and burns hot so it keeps the injectors and combustion chambers clean. I add a bottle of "Marvel Mystery Oil" to a tank once a month.

The problem comes when people use straight ATF as fuel. It burns great, but is not a very good top end lube. The detergents can actually wash the lubrication out of the combustion chamber and cause premature engine failure (so it's been said). I personally know someone using is as a fuel source, but they add 1 gallon of TCW3 2-stroke oil to each tank for lubricity. So far so good, but I wouldn't do it.
