Rollover Pass
I finally got a response from Mr. Patterson:
The red is my comments:
Dear Mr. Cunningham:
Thank you for your email of January 26, 2009 regarding Rollover Pass. First of all, I apologize for the delay in this response. The Texas General Land Office (GLO) is committed to doing all we can to help the Texas coast recover from the unprecedented destruction brought by Hurricane Ike. In any recovery, communication is vital, so I appreciate your correspondence.
As the Texas Land Commissioner, I am leading the effort to close Rollover Pass as soon as possible due to the high maintenance costs to the U.S. Army Corps of Engineers (USACE) for keeping it open and the erosion the pass causes on the Bolivar Peninsula. The process of closing the pass, however, will take time. The following is a brief overview of what this effort will entail.
I will be seeking money from the Texas Legislature this session to close rollover Pass. SEEK MONEY TO KEEP IT OPEN
The 81st Texas Legislature convened January 13.
Closing Rollover Pass, like any project on the coast, will require a permit from the USACE. Various studies would be required by the USACE as part of the permit application process. Once the permit from the USACE is received and funding is in place, work on closing Rollover Pass may begin.
GLO staff is already working towards this goal. The entire process-performance of studies, permit application and approval, acquisition of project funding, project design and construction-will take more than a year, possibly longer. PUT THESE EFFORTS TOWARDS KEEPING IT OPEN
Regarding your concern for maintaining recreation fishing opportunities and mitigating the erosion to Bolivar Peninsula, I believe recreational fishing opportunities can be maintained in the area through the construction and maintenance of fishing piers in the vicinity of Rollover Pass. Such piers, unlike jetties, will minimize the impact of erosion along the shoreline in the vicinity of Rollover Pass.
If you wish to speak to one of our staff members in person or if you have additional questions, you may contact Eddie Fisher, Director of Coastal Protection, at 512-463-9215 THIS LOOKS LIKE AN AUSTIN NUMBER, GIVE ME SOMEONE LOCALLY THAT CARES

J.Patterson is a spinning Toronado of stupidity !!
Take a look at what he has done, collectively(sp?) along the Upper TX Coast,,From Galvez city council(seee W.End Development and the TOBA) to Rollover pass the guy is an absolute MORON !!
Fishing Piers ??? and who will pay for that ??the state?? Hell no they wont pay for any freakin fishing pier,,does the state own ANY fishing pier that fishes the Gulf ??
The only pier I can think of that the state owns is the Copano Bay fishing pier, and thats just a section of old highway.
Patterson is a mouthbreathing, Drool Cup wearing, MORON !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Someone needs to load him up on the next Shuttle to the ISS.

He'll just try to shut that down as well.
Please don't get me wrong, I do not support the closing of the pass.
It seems as though they are pis##ing money off just to close and insure that that end of Bolivar never thrives again. The pass generated so much money from anglers visiting it daily.
Looks like a sit in is in order. I organized golf tournaments, fishing tournaments, and now the East bay restoration project, I sure as hell can organize a sit in. All we need is beer, boats, & people.

I don't know how many if any of you realize this or not, but prior to the opening of Rollover, East Bay was fairly pristine ...
The decesion to close the pass is due to silt infiltration, so out of curiosity's sake ... what's the problem with closing the pass ... ? A better fishery seems like it would generate more money to me ...

I keep hearing about the beach erosion that the pass causes but where is the evidence? I looked it up on google earth and the beach near the pass looks just like it does everywhere else on the Texas coast. They need to keep it open, imo.
