Wendi's silver Redfish?

Does anyone have the scoop on coloration of Redfish? I always assumed it was diet and surroundings but the recent picture of Badhabit’s trip and Wendi’s Red being so silver doesn’t go with my assumption. The Reds in the marshes of Louisiana are very dark orange. Light brown/orange for the Texas flats and bay’s (for the most part) and silver with some blue in the surf at PINS. The one Wendi has looks just like a South Texas surf Redfish. Based on the off color water, I would have expected a lot more color. Can someone sort me out on this?

Regards, Chris

I always thought the red en's just spent too much time in the shallows and got sunburned!

Although the redfish wasn't big enough to keep, it was still my personal best...hopefully not for long though. You see, I grew up fresh water fishing with my Daddy....my cousin, BadHabit, turned me on to the salt water and this board almost a year or so ago. And I am ever so thankful. Can't tell you much about the colorings of the fish...the redfish Darrell caught on his BillyStix a few weeks back was more red in color. I'm curious to know about this though.

red reds

I always heard it had something to do with the depth of water they are caught in as well. That could be **** but it seems that the reds you catch on the flats in clear water are a lot more red that the deep water reds. Is it kinda like bass?, where the clear water fish are darker than the silver fish you seem to catch in muddy water? Here is a very red one that I caught last weekend at shamrock cove in shallow water...this is one of the prettiest ones i've caught, look at the red in the tail.

I'm going to guess a combo of depth and surrounding (water clearity, sand, mud, grass). At least I know thats what it is with bass. Of course you may catch a fish that just recently made the transition from deep to shallow every now and then.

Deebo, that one is RED for sure. Below is my Dad with a High Island surf Red that is very light but not as silver as the ones down South in the clear water.

It has to do with the...

clarity of the water. This will bear out if you kind of keep tabs on the reds that you catch. The murkier the water, the lighter colored the reds will be. The clearer the water, the more color will appear because the sun can penetrate the water better. It is kind of like us huymans getting a tan. If the weather is cloudy and overcast all the time, then we don't tan (unless you use a tanning booth) LOL. I remember reading this in a Parks and Wildlife mag or maybe even a Fish and Game mag. By the way, this is not gospel...just a fog riddled memory from sometimes back...VJER
