Question for all 2cool riders!!!
This is kinda an odd question.. But here goes.
Of those of you who have had a major accident riding, how long did it take you to get back on a bike, and how long before you got over the wreck.
I ask these questions because my neighbor who was new to riding, wrecked her harley last week and hurt herself pretty bad.. Kaylin talked to her husband about it, and it seems she made alot of mistakes and that led to the wreck.. However, he told Kaylin that she was not to worried about riding again that she said she would be back on riding as soon as she could.. Now, i talk to her husband today and he said.. She wont ever ride a bike herself again, she will however be a passenger..
So, were curious if she will ride again. He wants to go ahead and fix her bike and sell it if shes not gonna ride again, but doenst want to sell it it in 6 months she wants to go out and buy another one lol
Any ideals

Borrow a bike and take her on a ride. My wife had always said "no way" to the bikes. About six weeks after I bought one she finally started speaking to me again and I asked her out on a ride. Now she loves it.

Kaylin should allow you to get a bike. Make sure she knows you're going to be extra careful. I got out of riding for about 15 years. It wasn't because of an accident or anything like that. About three years ago I picked up a little custom. Man the feeling of getting back on with the wind in my face was an awesome feeling. You couldn't wipe the smile off my face.
Kaylin just doesn't know how fun it would be to jump on that thing and take a spin down South and hire a guide and go fish. Take pics the whole way.
Keep working on her Thomas...I'm crossing my fingers! Come on Msaddicted put your game on!!

Hi Texxan1,
In answer to your first question, It's been a little over a year and one-half since I was hit from behind on my bike by a crotch rocket running from the law (they estimate he was doing about 120 mph). I had a fractured L2 vertebra in my back, severly sprained left ankle, had very little use of my right arm for a week or so, 95% of my back was deep road rash, deep abrasions on my arms, and some facial injuries from my helmet visor breaking.
It took about 12 weeks for the fractured vertebra to heal, about 2 months for the abrasions on my back to heal to a point where I could wear a shirt without some type of dressing to protect my wounds. I took physical therapy for 22 weeks and gained most of the function of my right arm back, but my recovery actually is still ongoing as there are issues that still persist, but have slowly gotten better with time.
As far as getting back on a bike, I borrowed a friends bike after I had completed PT, rode it around the plant and out on the highway for a brief trip, and haven't been on one since. I've had bikes all my life and had some pretty nasty crack ups, but the circumstances were so bizarre in this instance, I just figure the big man upstairs was telling me that it was time to give up two wheeling.
As far as whether or not you should get a bike, that's just something for you and your wife to decide. I will tell you that I deeply miss heading out on a beautiful morning on my bike, but again, I just can't get past the memories of the pain of recovery. Good luck on making your choice and be safe.

I've been down hard twice. Both times I was severely injured and it took months before I could ride again. Neither wreck was my fault, but that don't make it hurt less. It just made me a lot more careful rider but in no way made me consider quitting riding. I've been riding since I was 10 and that's a bunch of years. I guess I'll keep on riding as long as I can get someone to help me get my leg over. It's not for everyone and I completely understand that after a crash a person might be reluctant to get up and do it again, but if you fall down, does that mean you won't walk again?

I was not in a major accident. I did lay my bike over pretty hard, pretty bruised and some nice roadrash here and there. The first thing I did after I fixed my bike was ride down the same road I layed her over on. It was one of those had to conquer that fear thing. I need a bike again!

I had a head on wreck Nov.29 06. I was lucky that I was riding the biggest Harley you can get and I was only going 40mph he was going only about 15 mph. My left arm will never be right again,my left leg is weak. I have a great love for riding,so I couldn't let this make me stop! I bought a new scoot 2 months before I could ride(had to twist a buddies arm to ride it home for me) I called it Mental Therapy,my wife thought I was crazy! As soon as I felt ready(only you will know this) I got on and took a short ride. It felt kinda weird at first, but I rode 14,000 miles since! Good luck with what you choose to do. Oh I almost forgot, the doctor said not to ride again and not to ride in a boat,so I bought another boat! I know more old fishermen and bikers than I do old doctors!! Fish hard & Ride Safe!

I was ran off of a curve by an oncoming vehicle driving in my lane last October on the scoot that's in my Avatar, the front forks were bent, front wheel bent, front fender torn up, both saddle bags road rashed ,Handlebars bent, rinehart headers and muffler's wasted and the "Crash Bar" which i used to call a "Engine Guard" was bent back on both sides, i still rode her back home 3/4 of a mile with heavy blood coming out of my right leg and 3 cracked ribs, road rashed hands, legs, hips, arms! I parked her in the garage for three weeks and would not open the door and even look at her, well i started walking a little better and breathing a little better , after that three weeks , i opened the door , put her up on the lift , tore her down and rebuilt her, and had her rolling again in six weeks ! Still riding with a smile on my face , either you want to ride or you don't , bet back on and if you don't feel like you can overcome the fear, get off and get on back of one
