Gars Galor!

I need to thin a few gars from the rice canal behind my house. They are pretty thick and got to thinking about how many perch they must have to stay in shape. I was thinking my heavy pitching rod with 50# spider wire with a double drop leader, trebels and cut mullet. Would chicken parts be ok. Any suggestions would be appreciated.

What kind of gar??? Alligator, spotted? Almost anything will work. I've even caught them on cheese, hot dogs, and bacon. I usually keep a small bag of sardines separate when I buy for offshore and they work great. I guess it is the oiliness. I fish for them in Oyster Creek in the Lake Jackson area and have caught them up to approx 100#. Definitely use a wire leader. There are lots of ways to catch them (loops, rope, etc.) but bait seems to be easiest for me. If you need some help I'd be glad to come snag a few with you.

If you or someone you know has access to a fishing bow setup and some lights, set up the lights and shoot away. It's a blast! If you just want to eradicate them, do the light setup with some goose loads in a 12 ga. shotgun.

Cat'n has the idea if you like to bow fish.

I used to use an AK47 to shoot gar in the shallow waters of the Sabine River in East Texas. Be careful if you use this method because shooting into water can be dangerous.

We have also pulled a few off of our trott-lines, but I would suggest some type of sturdy wire leader if you want to set a trott line because their teeth are many and very sharp. Any kind of cut-bait will work but I know you will get their attention with chicken livers.

The old time gar fishermen put the oily bait in pany hose. The gar gets the panty hose all tangled up in his teeth and you've got him. The panty hose is tied to your main line.

Your normal Kingfish tackle set up will work fine with 30-40lb test line. For a leader, use about 18"-20" 60lb test coated stranded wire with a #2 VMC treble hook. For the bait, the best is a mullet or shad about 6" long (live or fresh dead). Use a barrel swivel at the top of the leader with 3/4oz. egg sinker. Please don't shoot them, though they are not considered a game fish they must be taken in a legal manner and the last time I checked, Shot guns and AK47's are not in the rod "n" reel section at Academy. Also like other fish they cannot be wasted. There are fish markets that will buy them by the pound. Several in the Seabrook/Kemah area. Happy fishing! Gater
