Swordfish Gear???

Alright swordie experts, if you were to put together a set of matched rods/reels (dedicated to swordfishing) starting from a blank slate what would they?

My only requirement is that it be stand-up gear, don't care for the chair.

By no means an expert, never even caught one, but Tiagra 50W loaded with 100lb. Jerry Brown will do it. Put them on Cape Fear rods, all rollers. That is what I have. Good Luck.

Thumbs up stand-up

Tiragra 50 LRS 1/2 80# braid 1/2 80# mono top shot
Rod what ever you like.
200-250# wind on leader.
We use bent butt 80 Tiragra but A good 50 setup should be just fine.

Broad Bill Swordfish

I can't wait to get back out there and get our Swordfish drift on. I am full on getting that state record on rod and reel. The current record is 317# caught July 21 , 1979. We got the record on electric reel last year 265#.

It is so nice to get out there and turn on the lights. Turn them diesels off, lots of cool stuff comes up if your in the right place. We had a 4# squid jump in the boat 2 years ago. Last year we pitched a bait to a small sword that swam up right behind the boat eating some small squid.

Hey Capt Matt, do you run a sea anchor off the bow or drift sidways at nite? I'd heard that if you can attract the squids you got it half made ... /sammie

Sea Anchor

We have one . If it is calm I don't use it but it is good to have one. It can be a pain to deal with when you do get hooked up. We have not lost a fish because of it yet but it will happen. Have you seen a big one pulled up in a hurry? It looks like a paratrooper crashed on the deck.

LOL, Capt Matt, I was just thinking of an inshore funnel with a rope on the end easy to pull in quick ... but you're right, you might drift past your lines and get tangled in the rigging so maybe nekkid is the way to go. Swords don't like all that noise and commotion anyway ... sshhhhhh!

Drift

Yes, If you don't need it that fine. But if it is 2-3' you would want it out that crazy rocken gets real old after a few hours.
About the bait , I have noticed small baits congergating in and around the parashoot.

How many of you guy caught A Sword in Tx

I don't know about you guy's but I love Sworden more then any other type of fishing around here. We do a lot of Billfish trollen and that cool. But Marlin fishen in Tx is a lot of Driven around.
A 150# Sword can light up a 80 for a hour. Man they make some killer runs long after the strike is over.

Capt. Matt,

What kind of drag setting do you use with 80lb line?
