rigging questions

Couple questions;

On diving lures/ marauders
1. What size cable do you use?
2. What length?

On trolling plugs, black barts, softheads, etc.
3. What connection do you use between the mono and the "gaff"? I'm sure it's crimped but is it a loop to loop or mono to cable? What I'm after is what is going to sit properly inside the lure head.
4. What length mono?

1. 160lb 49 strand Malin

2. about 1 to 1.5ft

3. Loop to Loop, your gaff should have a loop w/ chafe protection crimped in the wire at the end. Put some kind of chafe tubing on the mono and crimp a loop through the gaff loop. A stiff rig should be affixed to the lure head somehow in order to ensure that it remains stiff, and that the lure runs correctly. I think the best way to do this is a black rubber stopper. To see how it's done, look at any of Bart Miller's recent lures, they come ready to go. Melton sells the stoppers as "hook locks" and charges over $1 each. The other alternative is to buy 'em in bulk (just google test tube stopper) for about a dime each (the stopper should be glued to the back of the lure's head). Once you've crimped the mono to the stiff rig, the crimp on the mono slides back up into the stopper and holds everything in place.

4. I assume you mean the leader length. That will depend upon whether you use a wind-on leader or traditional (I'd strongly recommend wind-on). In the case of heavy trolling wind-ons, that's a whole discussion in itself as there are literally dozens of combinations of leader / double line / swivels that will work. The main thing for trolling would be to make sure your swivel isn't skipping along like a tiny lure.

#300 and make it short enough that the lure can hook a reel eye and swivel not touch rod tip... 30-36" ?

On diving lures 5-6' of 230# brown colored stranded wire. (We have another 12' of wind on leader.)

On trolling lures the hook rig is crimped directly to the main leader. The end of my hook rig has chaffe tubing, as does the crimped loop in the main leader that connects to the hook rig. Then I use electrical tape at the connection to keep it straight. A dab of glue may help keep the tape from un raveling.

The crimp on the main leader slides nicely into the hook lock on the back of Black Bart lures.

Good luck

1. What size cable do you use? Coffee colored single strand 80# and up depending upon where I'm at and what is there. I do a haywire twist to a loop on one end and haywire a mcmahon swivel on the other and I can change lures in a hurry if I need to.
2. What length? 4-8'

On trolling plugs, black barts, softheads, etc.
3. What connection do you use between the mono and the "gaff"? I'm sure it's crimped but is it a loop to loop or mono to cable? crimp the mono through the cable loop on rigged hooks with a thimble for protection. What I'm after is what is going to sit properly inside the lure head. you may want to put a plastic bead to make it ride stright and smooth....on hard heads you can dremel out a nice spot for them to ride.....
4. What length mono? depends but generally 10-12'

Here are the igfa rules in case you catch a record:

C. DOUBLE LINE
The use of a double line is not required. If one is used, it must
meet the following specifications:
1. A double line must consist of the actual line used to catch the
fish.
2. Double lines are measured from the start of the knot, braid,
roll or splice making the double to the farthermost end of the knot,
splice, snap, swivel or other device used for securing the trace, leader,
lure or hook to the double line.
Saltwater species:
In all line classes up to and including 20 lb

(10 kg), the double line shall be limited to 15 feet (4.57 meters). The
combined length of the double line and leader shall not exceed 20 feet
(6.1 meters).
The double line on all classes of tackle over 20 lb (10 kg) shall
be limited to 30 feet (9.14 meters). The combined length of the double
line and leader shall not exceed 40 feet (12.19 meters).

D. LEADER
The use of a leader is not required. If one is used, it must meet
the following specifications:
The length of the leader is the overall length including any lure,
hook arrangement or other device. The leader must be connected to
the line with a snap, knot, splice, swivel or other device. Holding
devices are prohibited. There are no regulations regarding the material
or strength of the leader.
Saltwater species:
In all line classes up to and including 20 lb

(10 kg), the leader shall be limited to 15 feet (4.57 meters). The
combined length of the double line and leader shall not exceed 20 feet
(6.1 meters).
The leader on all classes of tackle over 20 lb (10 kg) shall be
limited to 30 feet (9.14 meters). The combined length of the double
line and leader shall be limited to 40 feet (12.19 meters).
