which Shimano spinning reel for close to beach & light offshore use

I am looking for a recommendation on which Shimano spinning reel to purchase. I will be using this for nearshore & light offshore use. I would like something for 25# to 30# line to put on a rod around 7' that I can cast large plugs and live bait with (from a boat, not the beach). I would like the reel to have a good enough drag to handle smaller tarpon and kingfish etc.

I have a couple of old Penn 704Z's on 6'-6" rods which are good for soaking bait but not very good for casting. Also, they are really old technology.

I am looking at the Spheros SP14000FA ($139.99) or a Baitrunner BTR6500B ($119.99). Any comments on these reels would be greatly appreciated.

I would also like any input on a rod for this same use. I really don't want to spend more than $200-$250 for the combo.

Thanks.

Thumbs up

For fishing live bait or chunking, the baitrunner is the way to go. The baitrunner feature makes fishing live bait much easier. It essentially allows you to have the easy castability of a spinning reel with the control of a casting reel. It is also invaluable for deadsticking baits in a rod holder.

For 25#-30# mono go with the 6500. If you are using braid you can get away with the lighter 4500 size.

Good Luck!

I'll agree with Bob on this. The Baitrunner is a durable reel and is perfect for what you plan to use it for.
