Well I finally got a little more familiar with the GPS this weekend. I am much more impressed with it since I turned up the detail. I noticed things that were not there before.
I noticed some water areas were green. I assume this is potentially shallow water?
The Grass was self explanatory.
Is is there a symbol for reefs, specifically ones that are close to the surface that could damage a boat? Also I did not go to the ship channel is it clearly marked? Any other colors that mean specific things? I could not find a legend that explained things. Thanks for any help you can give.

Blue Chart and Navionics both use standard nautical notation on their charts, just like that used on the government paper charts. The NOAA website should have a legend online somewhere in the charting section. http://www.noaa.org/
Go to Garmins website and download the user manual. That is what I did and I printed it out and put it in a three ring binder. Makes for some nice reading when you are bored too.
I have the 182C. The shipping channels are clearly marked. Like most GPS units, don't get too comfortable with the map, because they aren't completely accurate. They are good indicators especially if you leave a trail to follow.
As far as I can tell, the Bluechart map is about the same on the PC as on the unit itself.
Hit the menu button and scroll down to tides. Right arrow over to the location block and hit enter. Scroll down the list to the nearest location to you or where you want to fish. Hit enter again. Should pull them up. At least thats how I do it on my 178.
yea the green area's are potentially shallow areas, in fact alot of the water I run thru at times are in the green areas lol. The major reefs will usually be marked on the maps, the smaller ones you find by trial and error and mark them yourself, and TooTall nailed the tides function, its the same as my Garmin 498 as well.

That's how it works on the 182C as well. I use it all the time. It's pretty darn accurate.
GPD with WAAS is very accurate but if your back trailing through a very small shallow pass at low tide and it was high tide when you left...........be careful, their not that accurate all the time and 10' off will run your boat a ground.
