If the boat does not still have the max HP tag. measure the bottom at the widest point across the bottom not the inside.
Mfg's model numbers on jons are length x width. For instance a standard 14' jon would be a model 1432 or 1436. Extra wide jon boats would be 1442, 1448, 1452,
Flat fishy's with a 48" wide sheet of plywood on the bottom would be a 1452 and easily take a 25. The max rated horsepower for most 14' boats is 15hp unless they are the wider ones. I have a 1452 with a 25 that is great. Also have a 1436 that does well with an 8hp but rated up to an 15 and would be very dangerous with a 25.
After you measure your boat go to some of the jonboat mfg's websites and see what the rated max motor is for your size boat. You will also see that most Mfg's will allow slightly more horsepower on the same boat if it is remote steering rather that tiller steering due to weight distribution. on narrower 14' jons remote steering is usually not an option. Tex

You'll be alright, I had a 40hp on my 12'x66" aluminum scooter. We would fish two people off of it plus the 6 gallon tank, gear (1 big tackle box) and ice chest. The only time water would come over the deck would be when two people were standing close to each other or when somebody would stand by the motor.

You'll should be fine. I run a 14' Monark with a 30. This is a narrow slight vee hull. The hull is rated for 25 hp but those are only the coast guard guidlines so you won't try to put on a 115 and invite fourteen friends to go with you.

We ran a 30hp on a 15ft'er w/ a 48" bottom. Plenty of top end and safe.
