Texasflag4 Older 36ft Hatteras Convertible

Anyone have any thoughts on buying a mid 70's Convertible. Here is my line of thinking. Smaller boat that will allow access to the floaters and also allow you to get out of the weather, cheaper to run than a 45ft same vintage. Any thoughts on the Cummins 6BTA motors that are in them?

My primary concern is speed and functionality. If the salon is not big enough to sit a few folks in comfortably then the boats not worth having. If it is only going to go 19knts then you might as well buy a bigger boat that goes the same speed. I am looking for a boat that has some good rough water ability. Since the GOM is like a toilet bowl and never is real calm it is important that it run well in 3-5 ft.

those are not original engines. the earliest 6b's were late 80's. i have a pair of 6bta 250hp in my boat and i think they're great. i prefer convertibles to 40 knot outboard rocket ships and hatteras made some of the best. especially the early ones before anyone knew how thin you could layup a hull. yep, storage, maintenance, fuel, upgrades, repairs, insurance and where to put it when the storm comes. it all goes into the decision. just replaced one of mine with a cummins recon from williams diesel for $11k exch. it was a late 80's model with lots of hard hours.

My dad's boat (The Wahoo) is a '75 custom boat - same hull as the old Bertrams with twin 300 Cummins diesels. Great rough water boat and proven tournament winner - for sale at Fox Yachts (link below if you are interested):

Any ideas what to expect performance wise on this boat? Is it unreasonable to expect this boat to get 1 MPG while cruising at 24knts?

sure, clean bottom, light load, in the ditch on a short run. you didn't spec the horsepower, 6b's range from 180 to 370. loaded for a 100 mile trip in 3 to 5's i'd be surprized. cruise range is pretty subjective, 20 experienced mechanics will give you 20 different opinions. usually some percentage of rated top rpm. i have a '71 33' owens with 250's. my wheels are not steep enough, so my rpm's are higher than some people like, but they don't get overloaded. i can conservitively state 20 knots at 1gpm in the gulf. as long as it doesn't get too rough, at which time i don't even want to be there.

What is the horsepower rating on the current engines? Also, how much fuel does the 36 Hatt hold. I think originally it was 300 gals. If it is still 300, you will need to carry extra fuel to fish the Spars.

I would guess if they are 300hp, you would cruise around 21-22 and top out at 25-26. 1-2 knots less if it has a full tower. Probably burn around 25 gals per hour at cruise. That would be .88 NMG, and yield a range of 237 NM. (Based on 270 gal usable fuel) Good luck with your decision.

I have seen the Wahoo in Port A, and it would definatley be worth looking at.
