hello bill i found out the modem in my mothers computer says it is a dell data and fax modem so now what is that and why cant i get dial up with it

Did you check for conflicts and drivers?

my son is telling me it is a cable modem not dial up could that be my problem

Yes it makes a difference. In the PM I got, he was wanting to install AOL and dialup.

yes in pm all we new was it was saying no modem detected now we found it has this type modem im thinking to just get a external dial up modem for it ive seen one the will go on hold does that mean you can answer the phone while online

OK, a (MOH) modem on hold will (sometimes) work if you have call waiting.
If I may, rather than paying $10+ for dialup, if possible pay an extra $6 and get DSL (Yahoo I think still offers a $16 or 17 package) and it will make a world of difference plus you can still use you phone anytime. If you go this route with DSL, they will send you a modem and all the connections (filters, USB and Network cable).

One more thing, once installed, AOL is hard to remove. It installs into everything.

you nailed it there bill. I hate AOL's "your stuck with me" installation. MOH was a good Idea but never did work well enough to have it in my opinion.
