I haven't scaled a fish in years. I just filet and keep the skin on for a half shell or use the knife to remove the skin. MUCH easier on cleanup than scales all over everything.
I only scale flounder and recently saw on here to fix 'em to the ground and use a pressure washer....still haven't tried it but people on here say it works so I've gotta try it. Don't know if it would work on trout or other fish.
I saw a man at a fish cleaning station Thursday using a wire brush and it seemed to work great for him. He swore by it. He was scaling sand trout and flounder. I just filet everything except redfish and I leave the scales on the half shell.
Had some neighbors use my cleaning table to scale some trout, was cleaning scales for three days they wer everywhere. What a pain in the *** that was...!
never heard of wire brush but at the fish market i used to work for we used horse hair brushes and they worked fine to descale a couple of hundred lbs every day.
I have used wire brushes, electric knife at 90 degs., pressure washers and even spoons. I like the skin on some of my fish but hate the scale them. If you want to scale fish easy and fast go buy a Bear Paw 2 amp fish scaler. Cost more than a wire brush and not as messy as a pressure washer. The 2 amp scaler is commercial grade and will even knock the scales of a slot red. I used one for 3 years now and use it a bunch, especially on flounder. I think they run $174.00 from Bear Paw.
I have a good friend that guides on Texahoma and has one for crappie, give him a call, I think it will hold 20-25 at a time.

Just tell him Capt. Mike sent you.
Heard of someone using one of those hand held mixers with only one paddle in.
