Received this in an e-mail today and wanted to let fellow 2cooler's know that wanted to participate. Who is in ?

The 2013 crab trap cleanup is scheduled for Saturday February 16th. We encourage you to put together a group from your chapter and participate in the effort to remove the abandoned traps in our bays. Below you will find the contact numbers for the TPWD staff that are in charge of these areas. They can inform you where the closest dumpsters are for you to deliver your collected traps. This has been an extremely successful program and we would like to continue the tradition. Thanks.

This year's closure will begin on February 15 and will run through February 24th. Our main event day will be on Saturday the 16th. The site list has not been finalized at this time but will be similar to last year's list with the glaring exception of Conn Brown Harbor in Aransas Pass which is undergoing renovation and will not be open to the public until sometime in March or April. That site will likely move to Ransom Channel Park Public Ramp (Unattended site) also in Aransas Pass. Folks can contact their local coordinators as listed below or myself for more information and assistance. And they can email: crabtrap@tpwd.state.tx.us for any questions.

Sabine Lake - Local TPWD coordinator Jerry Mambretti (409) 983-1104 (ext. 222)

Thanks again for your organization's involvement and we look forward to working with you. Please feel free to contact me if I you have any questions.

This is a great program. The idea is to get traps out of the water. With the traps being so bulky and the drop off few and far into the distance it is hard to get a LOT of traps out of the water due to the number you can carry and haul time.

Seems the idea is to get them out of the water so if we use West Bay for an example and say we have half a dozen or more spots around the bay then we can grab more traps out of the water and just put them on land out of harms way close by to be picked up later or just left till they can be.

Upside you get a lot more traps out of the water and a lot more people would pick up the traps in their own immediate fishing areas and throw them on the bank that would not haul them 5 or 10+ miles off to some distant drop off point.

Downside is you have a pile of cr-- on some of the banks out of the water that may never get picked up but most Galveston's shoreline has a little cr-- on it now.

Or since they were abandoned out of the water the state could pick them up at their leisure.
