The OP was talking about bringing his own boat so I was trying to point out that he would not be eligible for the cheaper 3 day licenses like a couple people have mentoined, as you have to be fishing with a licensed guide or licensed charter skiff to get those cheaper license rates. He would need to get a non-resident salt water trip or season license (with basic fishing) if he is not going with a guide. At least that is the way I am interpreting their license page linked below.

There any guides that we could follow on our boat? I know some guides in texas do that but I dont know about LA?

I agree. That practice is usually discouraged. You can also bet if they did let you have a follow boat, you would get to see the community holes!

Like everyone else on here is saying, getting a guide the first day is worth every penny. It is a very large area with tons of places to fish. The jetties should be good on live bait that time of year. One thing I learned over there. In many places the water is really clear and the fish are super spooky then here in Texas. If you see fish signs and other boats start your drifts way up wind of where you think the fish are.
