Tips for Calcasieu

Me and a couple of buddies are planning a trip to fish Calcasieu sometime in June or July. We are dragging a 22' mowdy over there and already found a place to stay. Havent fished the LA coast, looking for some tips to fishing this body of water. Any info even if not fishing related would be greatly appreciated.

Tight lines,
Beaux

Book a guide on first day and narrow your search down. It's a big lake

A guide is always a good way to get a head start on a bay system you're unfamiliar with. You can save money and allot of wasted time, and hopefully, if with the right guide learn allot. We do it form time to time and especially in the winter.
I like learning new areas and a locals perspective of his home waters.

If not the weirs on the east shoreline from mid bay to the south end can be excellent, as well as the mid bay reefs. Get a hot spot map or equivalent and locate the reefs and weirs and put a plan together. Regardless, always try to fish bait and/or structure. tight lines n good luck.

Getting a guide the first day is a great choice... I've always enjoyed my trips with the Stansels of Hackberry Rod and Gun.

June or July the lake can heat up quite a bit. If the wind is light, hit the holly beach rocks or the short rigs. The redfishing in Big Lake proper can be off the hook if you know how to find them.

ya'll have fun.

X2 on getting a guide the first day.
The lake can be brutal on windy days so just keep that in mind. Other than that get the 3 day fishing license its only 10 bucks.

3 day fishing license is only if you go with a licensed guide, right? The way i read the site, if you go on your own you have to buy one of the non-resident options for license.

I am not sure if its a difference. I went about a month ago to big lake and it was a 3 day non resident license and i went w/ a guide for 10 bucks. not sure if that answers your question but that was my experience.
