Freshwater baits & saltwater fish

Made a run down to Chocolate Bay this morning early before the wind got to be too much to enjoy casting. Been watching the big boys on the redfish circuits using deep diving crank baits to get the redfish so brought along some that I used back in my freshwater club days. Turns out the redfish liked them more than the bass did! I got into the ICW and worked along the edges down to as deep as 12 feet or so. The square bill models rarely snagged and if they did and if I didn't pull to hard the bouconcy of the lure would usually float them back up. No flounder , but I now have a lot of baits to get back in the game! Gold and chartreuse were the most productive colors.

Good to hear. I have a lot of luck using bass chatter baits in the marsh and back lakes. One of my go to bass fishing plastics is a chivken boy bubba clucker in the goldfish color.

Bass lures work great for redfish, crank baits, spinner baits, spoons and top waters all started with bass fishing and pretty much everything else.I remember back when you'd rarely see a trolling motor on a bay boat but every bass rig had one.

In addition to whatever local techniques are working, I troll-fish everywhere I can and have been ... diving shad rapalas seem to work universally and some of the lighter colored rooster tails ... I even got some action out of a strike king before ... haven't tried hoola poppers though ...

We used to mop up on Trout in the winter with a small Rapala Shad Rap.
I use all sorts of freshwater baits in the salt.

Absolutely... most of the topwaters we're using today were all originally from fresh anyway. The Zara spook has now become the one-knocker with the addition of a rattle in it. Get ya a variety of lipped crank baits for fishing different depths.... they are killer on redfish. So are rattle traps. Might have to do a little hook maintenance a little sooner and watch to make sure they get a little heavier split ring that is stainless so those reds won't tear them apart.

You didn't say how many reds or trout you did catch.

My PB spec was, 30" 9lbs-10oz *

Caught on a blue back, silver belly Excalibur Suspend R crankbait. Now the * on my PB is because I caught her at a place I didn't have permission to be fishing and needless to say, if I were caught in there I would have been escorted to the local police station for further questioning and more than likely the recipient of some sort of criminal trespassing charge.

In my opinion its like the MLB guys that have HR batting records and titles that were on the juice, I just cant give myself full credit for the catch simply because where I was fishing was cheating. None the less I did catch that dirty 30 fat girl and for that I do give myself some credit. Much like the credit I have to give the juiced MLB players, doesn't matter how juiced you are, you still gotta have the talent to come around on a pitch thrown by a professional pitcher and his bag of tricks.

One big problem I found was those freshwater lures could not last in salt. They got rusted up so quick no matter how good I took care of them in every trip.
