Friday 10 Feb - Surf & Channels
My oldest is taking an Ichthyology course at TAMUG, so naturally I'll be going as often as I can to help with the field gathering portion. Started the day north (east?) of Beach Access #6, between Peregrine Condos and SLP. Conditions looked favorable, with shell on the beach and some short piling structure in the water. Fished shrimp, cut bait, and fish bites in the first two guts, but no takers in 4 hours (moved twice). Left the beach and went to SLP (Freeport side). Fished the surf side of the bridge and caught a nice-sized black drum for the cooler. No other takers when the seaweed moved in and carried all my lines (and nearly one of my rods!) towards the bridge. Pack up and moved again. Stopped on the other side of the channel (Galveston side) and fished for another hour there. Ended the day on the TAMUG campus, fishing from the T-shaped pier into the channel. One young man on the pier was having success (two sheepshead, one flounder, and some sand trout) but we didn't have any strikes. Dinner at Gorditas, then the long drive home.
The black drum fish tacos were very tasty!
