sheepshead SS report 6-29-12 trolling for stripers and white bass

We took out Mike, from beautiful Beacon Bay today for some striper trolling.
Mike keeps his boat at Beacon's for a while each summer and spends some time catching white bass.
He always wanted to catch more stripers, but needed a little direction in getting there.
White bass are no problem for him, after years of doing it on Livingston with family, as a kid and on into life.
Stripers have given him the slip however, so he asked if I could help him troll for them more successfully.
After talking it over we took my boat and trolled with the big diver baits and a long leader, about 6' and various secret sauce trailers.
We caught 5 stripers total, 3 keepers and a handful of monster white bass we let go. The biggest stripers hit the secret sauce over the standard pet spoon.
Mike also caught a 4.5 pound blue cat that hit the trailer.

Lee and I went back this afternoon trying to repeat on the schooling fish, but got pinned down by the wind, and had to settle for trolling up some white bass close to the bank.

It is early yet, but soon the stripers will be prowling the shallow water with a vengeance.

See you on the water.

SS

Since SS and I are buds, he let me in on the secret sauce mention. Jack-N-the Box secret sauce dabbed on pet spoons. Isn't secret sauce just mayo, catsup and mustard mixed? I get the feeling the real originator of this may have something to do with Danny O!

No way, his is made in New York City!
Mine is South of the Mason Dixon line. Now dbullard pointed me in the right direction, but it was a flash of blinding insight at the Academy sale bin that produced the sauce.
This morning the bells and whistles were not the answer, but a bare pet spoon did bring home a little bacon.
Going back out at 4:00PM and check out the evening bite.
