PINS sand report

I am planning on taking the kids down to PINS for some sea shell hunting. Probably won't get to do any fishing, but was hoping to get a sand report and possibly some shell hunting locations. I do have 4wd and new BFG's, but my old truck lacks a lot of power. Thanks

Go farther than most people but not so far that the kids get sore about the trip. You'll find plenty of shells right in that sweet spot. Sea weed has been bad so beware of what looks like wet sand that could be mostly weed underneath...

Seems to be a lot of shell in the 20's, some up front early and then again later in the 20's. I guess one area is referred to as Little Shell and the other Big Shell, can't remember which is which nor the exact locations as I normally head further South to avoid more traffic.

Big Shell

go to the low 20's and look for the shell banks... Saturday is the FREE admission day and kids have some activities with the rangers, not sure details but you can call the park

I normally run way South also but agree on the High Banks (Big\Little Shell) area. Not far down the beach. Little Shell runs from about the 12 to 18 mile marker and Big Shell runs from the 18 to the 30. It seems my last trips down there the rough stuff starts about the 17-18 or so and that is also where you start getting into actual shell.

Have fun.
Sean

Made it back, no shells but a good day anyhow. We made it to the 20 mile mark with now problems. Sand was easy to drive through with only a couple soft spots.

WOW! Cleanest I have ever seen the little shell. Usually there is a ton of trash washed in from slobs dumping it off of shrimp boats. I always drove it a low tide so you can run the hard sand all the way to the big shell. But if you don't stay over night you can get into a bind trying to get back. if the tide comes in then you have to drive the soft upper beach and it can suck your gas tank dry quick. Also the big shell eats jeeps. loves them....always take plenty of fresh water. Fishing is always off the charts down there. Glad you had fun.

That's not little/big shell where the currents bring in the trash, that pic is up in the 50's.

JC, how was the trip? Glad yall could make it down to send George off properly. When my old yellow lab goes I'll be making a trip out to some old hunting grounds I haven't been to in years to send her off.

toothies would only hit mono for me, had 4 leaders shedded right next to the same baits on cable that went untouched... other than that the hardhead and bull whiting bite was solid!
