North Oman Report 3/17/2012

Hey Everyone!

Well i'm in the UAE, and I though i would try my hand at GT popping and test out my Pluto 9000 reel. To see how it does against these hard charging fish. I called up Ocean Active to see if there were any opening. I found out they had an open charter and were looking for one or two guys. So I jumped on it. I wanted to check out there operation anyways. I also wanted to try a few poppers i'm thinking about carrying.

Well the drive up there was to bad right at about 2.5hr's from Abu Dhabi. Took a few photo's on the way. well I got up there the afternoon before, so i could get the gear ready, and be well rested.

The day started out nice. It was nice, and cool and the seas were great. we started off hitting points and rocks. on of the guys missed a monster king fish on a stick bait. A few sails were working bait, but they didn't want anything to do with our baits. Oh I did get to see my first Sunfish at that spot. We move off to a near by reef were I hooked the first GT of the day. we made a few more passes, and it seemed like one else was home, But a monster King fish that missed the back hook of my popper. So we set out on the move again heading north to an area that was a pass between the main land and an island the current rips through the area and the fish were everywhere. we had tuna busting all around the boat, but they didn't want to touch a popper. I ran one right through them with out a single hit. one of the other guys was able to land a couple Big Eye Trevally on light tackle gear.

I was able to catch the most GT's out of the group, and I lost a few. I had a monster crush my Siren Popper which ended up snapping the main line. I was able to land a nice one on a Typhoon Popper, before the locals moved in on us, and blocked the area we were getting hit. It was late so we headed back to port. Not bad for my first trip. I look forward to going back and doing it again.
