Question Hiring a guide for your own boat?

My wife and I were talking last night about hiring a bay guide for this spring when we take our trip down to Matagorda. We got online and started looking, and all of the good ones are the same price and for 2 people or so, still a bit expensive. I know you get a lot for the money in info/ knowledge but can you save some by hiring the guide to spend the day with you on your own boat? Anyone actually done this? We'll have the boat with us anyway. Just a thought, but maybe guides don't want the liability of running a boat that's not theirs?
