Tips to help me in catching my own bait

Hey everyone,

In an effort to try to shave off some weekly costs I'm hoping to get some tips, general locations, or whatever in catching my own bait. I can throw a cast net I just don't even know where to begin to look for the bait itself.

Obviously if I see bait churning in the water I can figure out to throw a net towards them but that's a pretty rare thing for me to see.

Anyway any newbie tips and/or suggestions would be appreciated. I usually fish out of GYB or the TCD.
