Reduced recoil shotgun shells?
I am taking my Daughter,(17 yo) with me on her first goose hunt. She is somewhat small framed and probably won't be able to handle the repeated beating of the 12ga, with 3" shells. So, I am considering getting her some reduced recoil shells in 3". Anyone have any experience with these, and how much velocity/range we will sacrifice?
I would really like this to be a positive experience for her so that she will continue to go with me,(love spending time with the kids) and maybe get her own children into it one day.
Thanks,
Jeff

Just get some 2 3/4" BB's. People hunted for many years before 3" or 3 1/2" shells hit the market. It's great to hear that she's at least going to go with you to try it out. Being the father of two girls I just figured I'd be hunting with friends forever. Let us know how it turns out.

Not familiar with the reduced recoil Shotgun shells, but like stated get the 2 3/4 in
1 1/8 oz or less shells & that will make alot of difference in itself.
Good Luck to Y'all & I hope she gets bit by the waterfowlering bug! Nothing in the world better than hunting with Family!!

If possible make sure the gun fits her as good as possible. One of the biggest reasons for excessive felt recoil is a gun that doesn't fit .

I think Kent has some 2 3/4" 1 1/16 oz loads in 12 ga. I would think that would be ideal. Just get her some #2s and keep the shots under 40 yards and she'll be OK.

x2.... and make sure you show her the proper stance/shouldering techniques.... A good grip works wonders on recoil... and a newbie to the sport will need to be shown how to shoulder her weapon properly...
If you get those birds in close enough, she wont even feel ANY recoil... She will be too nerved up!
Have fun and let us know how it goes!
Kudos for getting youth involved and carrying on the hunting tradition to future generations!

Good advice. Also you can put a good pad on the gun, like a Decelerator, Limb Saver, or Kick eze. They really work well. I have the decelerator on two of my guns, a short barreled turkey gun and a duck gun and they make alot of difference. Especially on those shots where you don't get the gun squarely on your shoulder.
I know that tactical buckshot loads can be found in a lowered recoil offerings, but I wouldn't really want to try a lowered recoil/velocity shell to hunt with.

What kind of gun? Hopefully it's a gas auto like an 1100 or such. That will soak up a lot of the recoil as well.

Thanks very much for all of the replies.
On the semi-auto, I just don't trust them in the hands of an inexperienced shooter. Although she has heard many gun safety lectures, in the heat of the moment, I'm afraid she might forget her training.
On the gun fitting, where in San Antonio can a person get that kind of thing done?
Also, I do plan on getting her a decelerator pad.
Thanks again all,
Jeff
