Anybody had problems with biting flies?

Fished Carlos and Eastern Aransas Bay yesterday, beautiful day on the water, trout fishing was so-so, but we got hammered by swarms of flies that would bite the blood outta you, literally. Of course the can of Off i had in the boat had a broken tip so we were screwed. Has anybody else fishing lately had to deal with these and if so does repellent keep them away?

They usually do not get bad until late summer, September or so. The big rain may have had something to do with it. They can be bad.

I would usually just jump in the water and wade but i had my 3 kids in the boat, finally just went to the middle of the bay and they weren't there, neither were very many fish.

I am not sure, But down at POC they were everywhere on sunday with no wind. The off only worked for awhile. My only guess was the rains on friday and then the north wind on sturday kept them in check. It was the worst I ever saw yesterday.
